19SU05 Attachment, brain development and learning. Teaching the child who has suffered trauma and loss

This course is aimed at teachers and school leaders dealing with children whose challenging  behaviour  can disrupt teaching and learning and cause secondary trauma in peers and in those adults working with them.  Children who have been or are in the care of Tusla CFA or who have experienced trauma or attachment difficulties may not respond to commonly used classroom management and behaviour management strategies.  Through better understanding of attachment  and the needs of  children suffering loss and trauma, teachers may help them to regulate themselves and derive full benefit from their school life.  This course aims at giving teachers and school leaders  a greater insight into the behaviour  and needs of children in care or all those who’ve suffered loss and trauma and will support them to develop policies and practices to respond positively as individuals and as a school team.  Facilitators are Christina Enright, RN, BSc Psychology, Dip in Family Therapy, MA Child Psychotherapy, who over the past sixteen years has worked with children, adolescents and their families in a variety of settings, including schools. Her experience includes direct work, parenting assessments, consultation to staff teams as well as service development and clinical supervision and Anne McCluskey, BEd, BSc Behavioural Science, M Equality Studies who is the principal of a DEIS primary school and is a foster carer.
