This course is open to Primary and Post Primary Teachers

Dates: Tuesdays, 4, 11 & 25 February 2020
Time: 4.30 – 6.30 pm

While this course is targeted at teachers and school leaders working with children in care, it will have practical relevance for all teachers of children exhibiting signs of stress, trauma and attachment difficulties.

Overall aims:

·           To give an introduction to how attachment and nurturing influence brain development and all learning in the child and often into adulthood.

·           To introduce strategies for developing 'attachment aware' classrooms and schools and some resources to support teachers.

·           To explore teachers’ understanding of the causes and effects of trauma and attachment difficulties in children.

·           To introduce an understanding of therapeutic care; teaching strategies and effective, positive relationship building.

Methodologies:  Collaborative learning, PowerPoint presentation; close observation and case study.

Course facilitator: Anne McCluskey is a Principal (currently on career break) of a DEIS primary school with more than 15 years’ experience in educational disadvantage.  She has been a foster carer for more than 12 years and is an active member of the Irish Foster Care Association.

Module 1: Trauma is catching: Why do children in care find it difficult to manage school life and what effect does that have on teaching and learning in the classroom? An exploration.

Overview of the care system in Ireland.

Task / learning assignment; Case study; identification of child, and teacher’s diary/ log.  (Private and confidential and no child will be identified within the group)

Module 2: Reflection and feedback from diary keeping (without identifiable records). Introduction of structures and strategies to work effectively with traumatised children.   Resources and recommendations for further learning.  It should be noted that this is an introductory course offered by a teacher and foster carer – not a therapist.  While supports and referral agencies will be identified, the course itself will not offer these.
