Developing a trauma informed approach
This course is open to Primary and Post Primary Teachers
This course will have practical relevance for all teachers of children exhibiting signs of stress, trauma and attachment difficulties.
· To give an introduction to how attachment and nurturing influence brain development and all learning in the child and often into adulthood.
· To introduce strategies for developing 'attachment aware' classrooms and schools and some resources to support teachers.
· To explore teachers’ understanding of the causes and effects of trauma and attachment difficulties in children.
· To introduce resources to support the teacher in developing awareness and self-care for working with children who have experiences trauma and loss.
Methodologies: Collaborative learning, PowerPoint presentation; online resources.
Course facilitator: Anne McCluskey is a recently retired principal of a DEIS primary school with more than 15 years’ experience in educational disadvantage. She has been a foster carer for more than 15 years and is an active member of the Irish Foster Care Association.
Module 1: Trauma is catching: Why do children who have experienced trauma and loss find it difficult to manage school life and what effect does that have on teaching and learning in the classroom? An exploration.
Task / learning assignment; Case study; identification of child, and teacher’s diary/ log. (Private and confidential and no child will be identified within the group)
Module 2: Reflection and feedback from diary keeping (without identifiable records); Introduction of structures and strategies to work effectively with traumatised children, particularly; Observation checklist and emotion coaching; Task/learning assignment; practice active listening and emotion coaching in school setting and make reflective notes.
Module 3: Well-being clubs, nurturing trusting relationships; Learning to learn; Sharing of good practice, evaluation of classroom management strategies; Why some strategies won’t work with some children; What to do when ‘nothing works’; Self-care and resilience.
