19SPR32 Introducing Aistear to Infant Teachers

Aistear is a curriculum framework from the NCCA aimed at children from 0-6 years.

This series of workshops will introduce teachers to Aistear through the following topics:

 An Introduction to Aistear

    • Introduce you to Aistear and look at how some of the key ideas in Aistear can be used with the Primary School Curriculum.
    • Describe and show how play can be used to support children’s learning in infant classrooms and give guidelines on using the Aistear approach during the hour of child-led play/and using playful activities throughout the day.

 Planning & Organising for Play and Playful Activities

Explore what Aistear says about play including different types of play and introduce the idea of an hour of child-led play each day in single-grade and multi-grade classrooms.  It will also offer practical ideas for creating a playful classroom and for planning space, resources and time.

 Language & Literacy through Play & Playful Activities

    • Supporting children’s language and literacy through child-led and playful activities.
    • Identifying ways to assess children’s language and literacy through play.
    • Exploring how a play methodology can be used with the new Primary Language Curriculum.
    • Looking at practical ideas for working with parents to support their children’s language and literacy.

 Maths Through Play & Playful Activities:

Explore in a practical, hands-on way how to use play to support maths learning and development.   It will focus on the following areas:

    • Supporting children’s mathematical learning through child-led and playful activities.
    • Identifying ways to assess children’s mathematics through play.
    • Looking at practical ideas for working with parents to support their children’s learning in mathematics.
