The new Primary Language Curriculum states: ‘Language is central to how and what we learn. It is the primary medium through which new learning is acquired and assimilated. It plays a vital part in the expansion of the child’s conceptual framework and growth of the child’s conceptual knowledge, dispositions and skills. .. Each curriculum area has its own particular language or languages; therefore, every lesson is a language lesson in itself. Access to knowledge within the curriculum requires that children understand and use increasingly complex language at each class level within primary school. ‘
This course provides participants with a systematic approach to develop that language.
Spoken vocabulary at 5 impacts on reading comprehension at 15 years of age. Yet children from the poorest 20% are already a year behind with spoken vocabulary by 5. There are many children in our classrooms who need support.
Word Aware is a structured whole school approach to promote the vocabulary development of all children. Focussed on whole class learning, the approach is of particular value for those who start at a disadvantage - including children with Special Educational Needs and those who speak English as an additional language.
This approach is full of practical and inspiring ideas that can be easily applied by busy classroom practitioners to develop both spoken and written vocabulary. Course participants will have resources and ideas to apply immediately.
