20AUT05 Attachment, Brain Development and Learning - An Introduction

This course will have practical relevance for all teachers of children exhibiting signs of stress, trauma and attachment difficulties.

Overall aims:

·           To give an introduction to how attachment and nurturing influence brain development and all learning in the child and often into adulthood.

·           To explore teachers’ understanding of the causes and effects of trauma and attachment difficulties in children.

·           To introduce resources to support the teacher in developing awareness and self-care for working with children who have experiences trauma and loss.

Course facilitator:
Anne McCluskey is a recently retired principal of a DEIS primary school with more than 20 years’ experience in educational disadvantage.  She has been a foster carer for more than 15 years and is an active member of the Irish Foster Care Association.

Course Content:
The effects of relational trauma: Why do children who have experienced trauma and loss find it difficult to manage school life and what effect does that have on teaching and learning and on the adults working with them?

What does a trauma informed/ attachment aware school look like? Know your role and what you can do to support the child in school and in developing relationships

Never giving up - What to do when ‘nothing works’; Self-care and resilience

Course registrants will receive a presentation, resources and links to video material one week in advance of each webinar which will then form the basis of discussion at that webinar
